When it comes to food there is a big difference between foods that are frozen vs foods which are fresh. This goes for taste as well as mineral content. Nutrition is important for people who want to maintain a healthy existence. How and what food you ingest are as important as exercise and sleep.
When food is frozen it undergoes microscopic changes. The cell walls are warped and will sometimes break, causing the content of cells to spill out. This is why frozen foods seem to be mushy. When the internal content of these cells are exposed to the open air, they become oxidized and lose some of their taste and mineral value. Doug, owner of Island Smoothie in the Outer Banks NC put it like this: “There is no replacement for fresh. Freezing food will allow it to last longer but the quality of the product will deteriorate as well. The key to optimal food taste is to serve fresh food that has never been frozen.”
Sure, there is a time and place to freeze your food. For example, do you have a big fish catch that presents a situation where you will not be able to eat all the fish before it goes bad? Or, are you going away to a vacation home that is remotely located? Freezing food in certain situations is not only a convenience, it is a necessity.
The good news is that freezing typically does not cause the food to lose much nutritional value. The vitamin levels pretty much stay the same. This is why you can buy frozen orange juice, thaw it out and it will still be good for you.
Choose your stores wisely. Demand fresh food and not frozen food if you want the best quality product. But, if all that is available is frozen, it’s not the end of the world, so to speak.
